How do I use the InDesign extension?

With the Magma InDesign extension, you can easily download content uploaded to Magma directly into InDesign, as well as upload the finished layout.

You can download the extension here:

Works with Windows and Mac
(Requires CS5 or higher. OS X Lion users should make sure that Adobe Extension Manager is updated before installing.)

How to install it

  1. Download the file.
  2. Double click on the Magma.zxp file and Adobe extension manager should appear.
  3. Choose to install it for InDesign, accept the agreement and click install when the extension manager tells you that the publisher can’t be verified (it might ask you several times).
  4. If the extension was already installed, you’ll see a popup window asking if you want to remove the existing extension and continue installing, choose ‘Yes’.

How to work with the extension

Open up InDesign and go to “Window” → “Extensions” and choose “Magma”.
Now a Magma Panel should appear and you can log in with your Magma profile (The same email and password you use to log into Magma).

To get started, create a new document, select your publication and lastly select the issue you want to work on.

The flatplan for the chosen issue is now shown and you can see the layout status for each page, represented by a border color:

  1. Yellow for assigned to somebody.
  2. Red if the layout is overdue.
  3. Green if the layout for the page has been accepted as complete.

Articles and ads are shown on the pages as well, with an icon next to the title, indicating it’s status.

Downloading content

To download content simply select the pages you want to download content from and click the “Download content” button in the bottom left corner of the Magma panel in InDesign.
The content will then be downloaded to your computer and placed in the open InDesign document. It will be placed on the page in the InDesign document corresponding to the one selected in the extension.
If you, for example, select page 12 and click “Download content” but only have 8 pages in your document, additional pages will be added so that the content can be placed on the correct page.

Uploading layout

Once your done with the layout for a page select the page in the Magma Panel and click “Upload layout” in the bottom right corner.

You will then be asked wether the page should be sent for approval or not.

Sending a page for approval will notify the person selected and allow them to accept the page as complete or reject it.
Once a page has been accepted as complete you can no longer upload layout to that page. If you wish to make changes to a page after it has been accepted as completed, ask the editor to “reopen” it.

TIP

  • Both the “Download content” and “Upload layout” actions can be performed on several pages at a time. To select a range of pages simply click the first page and then hold down the “Shift” button on your keyboard while clicking the last page.
